85 Tignanello the (true) original Super Tuscan, July 19 at Tony’s
Giacomo Tacchis (pictured, left) is the winemaker who created Tignanello in 1971.
Some may be surprised to hear Tony call Tignanello the “true original Super Tuscan.”
Isn’t Sassicaia the first Super Tuscan? they will ask.
Yes, in fact, Sassicaia — a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc from Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast — was the first wine to be called a Super Tuscan in the United States.
But Tignanello, made from one of the greatest vineyards in Chianti Classico, was the first wine to blend Tuscany’s indigenous Sangiovese grape with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.
You’ll find many lots of Sassicaia — including older vintages — at Tony’s.
But Tony’s collection of Tignanello is testament to the great power of Sangiovese — the quintessential Italian red grape.
The legacy of this wine — Sangiovese blended with Bordeaux grapes — forever reshaped the landscape of Italian wine and its allure among collectors and top sommeliers.
Both wines were created by legendary enologist and winemaker Giacomo Tacchis (“Man of the Year,” Decanter, 2011).
While 1968 was the first release of Sassicaia, the first vintage of Tignanello was 1971. In subsequent years, the wine was only vinified and bottled in superior years, including the legendary 1982, 1985, and 1988 harvests, when Tacchis himself still oversaw vineyard management and winemaking.
On the occasion of his “Icons of Italian Wine” dinner (Thursday, July 19), Tony has decided to reach deep into his wine cellar: the 1985 Tignanello, a rare and highly coveted bottling that speaks as much to Italy’s place in the pantheon of great winemaking countries as it does to Tuscany’s ability to deliver “superlative wines,” to borrow a phrase by esteemed wine writer Hugh Johnson.
Tony is thrilled to be sharing this truly peerless wine with his guests on July 19.
